ALS stands for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It is characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons, which leads to muscle weakness, paralysis, and eventual loss of voluntary movement. ALS is often associated with the gradual deterioration of physical capabilities while cognitive functions may remain intact. The disease can affect different individuals in varying ways, with symptoms such as muscle twitching, difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing. The exact cause of ALS is unknown, although genetic factors and environmental influences may play a role. There is currently no cure for ALS, and treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life for those affected. The condition is sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, named after the famous baseball player who was diagnosed with it.
